Everyone wants good skin. Period. There are various types of cosmetic skin treatments available to rejuvenate your skin and bring back your lost confidence. Chemical Peel is one of the many cosmetic treatments that not only are a good option but are increasingly becoming the preferred choice of doctors and patients alike.

What is a Chemical Peel?
For those of you not familiar with ‘Chemical Peels’, in simple words, it is a procedure where the top or up to the middle layer of the skin are artificially exfoliated in a controlled environment using a wide variety of safe and skin-friendly chemicals to reveal a healthy, radiant, supple skin layer – mainly on the face, neck and hands.

What types of skin problems are chemical peels effective for?
Chemical peels can be used by individuals having any/all of the following problems.

  1. Fine lines
  2. Wrinkles
  3. Dark spots and scars
  4. Dark circles
  5. Pigmentation
  6. Tan
  7. Sun damage
  8. Acne marks
  9. Patchy or uneven skin tone
  10. Dry, dull or lifeless skin
  11. Melasma

Is a chemical peel harmful?
After a chemical peel, the newly exposed layer of skin may appear slightly darker or lighter for some time. It becomes somewhat sensitive to the sun as well. However, chemical peels are absolutely safe. However, post-op care must be followed as per your doctor’s instructions. Depending upon the type of chemical peel recommended by your dermatologist your recovery time may vary from anywhere between 4 days to 12 weeks.

What are the various types of chemical peels available?
Chemical peels are mainly classified into three types depending upon the types of chemicals used and the depth of exfoliation that needs to be achieved

  1. Light peel: Also known as simple or superficial peel, includes the use of alpha and beta hydroxy acids. A light peel is used for exfoliating only the top skin layer and has a typical recovery period of 4-7 days depending upon your skin’s regeneration and healing speed.
  2. Medium and Deep peel: These two types of chemical peels are used to achieve penetration up to the middle layer of the skin, using glycolic acid or trichloroacetic acid or certain phenols. These peels are used to treat damaged skin cells and the ideal recovery time for patients can be 1-12 weeks or more.
